Zak here...
Today, I want to talk about something that might make you raise an eyebrow—
"Mental Masturbation”
Now, before you let your mind wander into the gutter, let’s clarify what this is all about.
Imagine this.. You’re diving into activities or gobbling up information, thinking you’re making strides towards your fitness, nutrition, or any other specific goal.
But surprise, surprise—you’re actually stuck on a treadmill of inaction.
All you’re getting is a short-lived dopamine rush, giving you the illusion of productivity.
It’s like thinking you’re losing weight just by reading about it.
Spoiler Alert: you’re not.
I first stumbled upon this concept thanks to entrepreneur,Alex Hormozi.
This guy plowed through over a dozen self-help books, expecting his life to transform.
But guess what? Nada changed.
The real kicker?
He learned more from reading one book a dozen times than from reading a dozen books once.
Mind-blowing, right?
Now, let’s jump into the science of skill-building.
Picture this… A study with 7th and 8th graders tasked with making pots.
Group A spent 30 days perfecting one pot, while Group B churned out as many pots as possible.
Who do you think nailed it?
That’s right—Group B.
Their skills skyrocketed because Repetition is Key.
You’re probably wondering, “Zak, what does pottery have to do with fitness and nutrition?”
Well, think of “Mental Masturbation” as reading every book on weight loss, building lean muscle but never hitting the gym.
You’re filling your brain with info but not taking a single step forward.
In reality, what you need is a basic understanding, then dive in and start doing.
The magic happens through Consistency and Repetitions.
Whether it’s in a fitness gym or at home, the more you engage in physical activity, the closer you get to your goals.
The same principle applies to nutrition.
You don’t need a flawless diet plan to start losing body fat or gaining lean muscle.
Begin with the basics: eat foods that had a life cycle. If it was once alive, it’s fair game. Think fish, turkey, chicken, fruits, veggies, seeds, oils, nuts—you get the drift.
Stick to this, and watch those pounds melt away.
And… for the soda lovers out there, it’s time to break up with those fizzy liquid poisons drinks, and Yes… this also includes diet soda.
Opt for water with lemon or lime. Not only will you shed weight, but your skin, hair, and nails will look better than ever.
Bottom line…
Mental masturbation is the enemy of real progress! No amount of reading or consuming content will beat actually getting out there and putting in the work.
Like Alex Hormozi said, you’ll learn more from making 1,000 cold calls than from reading every book on sales.
The same goes for fitness and nutrition—real results come from action, not endless information.
So, how do you know if you’re stuck in the loop of mental masturbation?
Ask yourself if you’re just consuming content or if you’re taking consistent action towards your goals.
If you’re not moving forward, it’s time to shift gears.
Strive to become 1% better everyday.
